Description: What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is an oriental bodywork therapy using touch to promote physical health, relaxation and emotional calm. The word ‘shiatsu’ means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, although a practitioner will also use thumbs, palms, knees and elbows where appropriate. Sessions usually take place on a padded mat or futon at floor level with the client fully clothed and various holding, stretching and pressure techniques are applied to the whole body. Regular shiatsu can be effective in preventing illness as it helps to relieve muscular tension, stimulates the circulation and auto-immune system and assists the nervous system.
No prior experience is needed to come on this Foundation Course, just a fascination with the subject and a desire to find out more!
Over the 4 weekends (48 total tuition hours) you will learn:
A complete and effective shiatsu routine which you can practice on family and friends
A series of exercises for you to experience and enhance your own energy flow
The location of some major pressure points and their practical applications
Some simple diagnostic techniques
How Yin / Yang and Five Element theory relates to shiatsu practice
The history of shiatsu and of the Traditional Chinese Medical theory that underpins it.
Practical skills are central to all the weekends on this course with an emphasis in the last two weekends on treating back problems. You will learn simple routines that can be used with people lying down or sat in a chair.
